PortDesk — Port Warehouse Inbound Management System
Business SystemLogistics
A Windows Forms application that manages inbound/warehousing at Japanese port warehouses with complex logistics — such as Yokohama, Nagoya, and Kobe. PortDesk optimizes the process, reduces errors, and integrates with international standards like SCM and ERP.
01
Background & Challenges
- The legacy system used costly Oracle, so a migration to free PostgreSQL that still met requirements was needed.
- The legacy system was buggy and built on an old platform.
- The source design was unoptimized, making feature extension difficult.
02
Goal
Replace the costly, aging legacy system, streamline port-warehouse inbound operations, and build a maintainable, extensible foundation.
03
Solution
- DB migration: Moved from costly Oracle to free PostgreSQL, meeting requirements while cutting costs.
- Rebuild: Fixed legacy-platform defects and rebuilt on Windows Forms.
- Extensibility: Optimized the source structure to ease feature additions.
- Integration: Connected with customs systems and SCM/ERP standards.
04
Development Features
- Inbound management (by item, by port): create inbound slips, check & confirm, allocate storage locations.
- Integration with the customs system.
- Reports.
05
Results
- Cost reduction: Dropping the Oracle license lowered operating costs.
- Quality improvement: The rebuild fixed legacy defects and reduced data-entry errors.
- Extensibility & maintainability: The optimized structure makes adding features and maintenance easier.
- Operational efficiency: Reorganized the inbound–confirmation–customs flow, streamlining port logistics.
