POS Renew — Supermarket POS System Modernization
Business SystemRetail & Distribution
Modernized an existing app running on Toshiba POS terminals (Windows 7): added features, improved the UI, and built web-based data sync and management for store chains. Strengthened reporting and data import/export and migrated the legacy database — a retail POS renewal project.
01
Background & Challenges
- Legacy POS: A 2005-era VB app caused delays during operations.
- Outdated UI/UX: Less-experienced staff were slow at checkout.
- Old database: A bloated local file was hard to maintain, and data could be lost if a POS terminal failed.
- No reports/logs: There were no web-viewable logs or reports to reconcile against stores' paper reports.
- Unintegrated member benefits: The old payment features lacked member benefits; calculations were paper-based and gift cards were sent manually.
02
Goal
Modernize the legacy POS to improve usability and maintainability, building a modern POS platform that centrally manages the entire store chain.
03
Solution
- Code migration: Moved the app to ASP.NET and WinForms.
- DB migration: Migrated from Access 2000 to PostgreSQL 12 for easier scaling, management, and better performance.
- Cloud management: Added a cloud platform to monitor and centrally manage the whole store chain.
04
Development Features
- Supermarket POS checkout features.
- Shared master management, statistics, reports, and data import/export on management PCs.
- System-wide notifications, data backup, and log access.
- QR-code coupon integration via code or customer phone number.
05
Results
- Better usability: The renewal removed checkout delays so even inexperienced staff work smoothly.
- Maintainability & scalability: The PostgreSQL migration made the DB easier to maintain and scale and reduced data-loss risk.
- Centralized management: The cloud monitors the entire chain, with reports and logs viewable on the web.
- Member experience: QR coupons and member benefits are integrated into the system, cutting manual work.
- Delivery & operations: Built in 6 months (+2 months for delivery/handover); maintained with 0.25 BrSE and 1 Dev for a year, then fully handed over to the Japan side.
